This group meets during Advent and Lent, and at other specified times during the year, right after the 5 pm Seekers’ Service on Sundays. Watch this space for schedule and details. All are welcome.
Our topic will be The Book of Revelation, and we’ll use a commentary by Craig Koester entitled Revelation and the End of All Things. We’ll cover the first three chapters of The Revelation, and use the first two chapters of Koester’s book as our guide.
Readings for December 4: Revelation chapters 4–7, and chapter 3 of Koester’s Revelation and the End of All Things.
The 16th century Spanish mysticism of Teresa of Avila with its spiritual warmth and passion continues to inspire the Christian faith.
Among those who are in this tradition is Yale professor Carlos Eire in his books Waiting for Snow in Havana and Learning to Die in Miami. Eire writes about his experience growing up as a eleven-year old Cuban refugee in Miami. Eire was one of the Peter Pan children flown out of Cuba while expecting a quick reunion with his parents when they flew out a few days later. Instead, Castro stopped this expected reunion and Eire had to learn to live in this country without his parents. Eire’s compelling story is one of spiritual redemption and growth.
In our Lenten study, Nancy James will compare Teresa of Avila and Eire. Eire was James’ Ph.D. dissertation director at the University of Virginia. Nancy will present excerpts from Eire’s writing, as well as a comparison with the respected mystic, Teresa of Avila.
If you wish to read Eire’s very enjoyable books first, they are available at many local bookstores, and also online.
